How to Use Discord [PC/Mobile]

In the world of online chatting applications like WhatsApp, Line, WeChat, Kakao Talk, Telegram, etc., steps in another new dazzling application: Discord.

Discord is a proprietary freeware VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) application and a digital distribution platform that is designed for creating communities ranging from gamers to education and businesses. Discord especially focuses on text, image, video, and audio communication between users in a chat channel.

So, let’s see How to use discord:
1. Compatible Devices

Discord can be used on Windows, Mac OS, Android, iOS, Linux, as well as Web Browsers.

2. Download

It can be downloaded from Playstore (on your android device) or Appstore (on your iPhone). This app is 57MB in size.

3. Features

According to the official website, along with its amazing user-interface, this software has many other amazing features which make it different from many other online chatting apps, like:-

  • Server ownership (crown icon) and many more.

Apart from these, it keeps communities with the same interest connected.

4. Create Your Account

Note: If you start discord by just creating a username, you will only be able to use the browser version. However, if you want to use it on mobile application or computer application, you will have to create a proper account with an e-mail ID.

For creating an account, either go to Register Or Open the App.

Enter your E-Mail ID, put up a username, and create a password. You will get a confirmation mail from the Discord Team to verify your e-mail. In the received e-mail click on Verify E-mail to claim your account and avail every benefit of the app.

If you haven’t received the verification mail, don’t worry you just need to click on Resend e-mail on the orange banner at the top of the screen.

5. The Layout

Discord has got a very easy-to-understand, user interface. So, let us understand the layout from the left side of the screen to the right.

On the left-most side of the screen, you can see the direct messages. Also, if you have joined any servers, they will also be present there.

If you are on the direct message screen, you will see your friends list, and if you are on a Discord server, then you will see a list of channels in the server.

In the center of the screen, you will see the chats.

If you are on the DM screen and no chat is open, it will either be your Activity page or the Friends list.

If you are on the server or any group Direct Message, then on the right side of the screen you can see a list of the members of the server and their respective roles in server. However, if you are on the DM screen you will not see this.

Also, on the top of the screen, you can see a search bar if you want to search for something. You will see the search results, on the right side in the screen hiding the member list.

6. Sending Messages

It is very easy to send messages to your friends or the server members in this software. Let’s have a look at how it is done.

You can see the messaging bar at the bottom of the screen saying Message (personal or channel). Just type your message here and press enter key.

7. Muting

Having too many contacts means too many notifications and too much disturbance. Let’s see how to mute users, channels, and servers.

  • If you want to mute all notifications, just set your account on Do Not Disturb. Click on your avatar and you will find the option Do not Disturb. However, this will not mute the messages in which you are tagged in.
  • If you want to mute a particular user, right-click on their username mute them.
  • If you want to mute a server right-click on its icon and mute it.
  • If you want to unmute the channel click on the alarm-bell on the top of the screen.
8. Connect

If you want to join a server by getting its invite. You can get this invite through friends or you will get a link.

Read channel guidelines and follow them accordingly, or they will either ban, mute, or kick you out of the server.

9. Call (Personal or Group)

If you want to call a single person, in the center of the screen open online tab, and hover over the people you will see a call button on the right side. Or you can also call them by clicking on the call icon present in the individual’s DM screen.

If you want to call a group just open that group and click the call icon. You can also see if the members are muted or deafened near the icon.

If you want to join a call, just click on the green button saying Join Call.

Follow the same steps for the video calls too, just click on the video icon.

10. Blocking

You can block a person anytime you want. Just right click on their username and then click on Block.
